Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Snowblower Trac Problem, friction wheel, craftsman snowblower

Question
John, I have an old Craftsman Snowblower (5 23) with trac drive, model 536.884810.   Its been a good machine with only routine maintenance, and its been used hard here in the upper mid west.  This year when I started it out on the first big snowfall it was real jumpy when I engaged the track.  Doesn't matter what level of forward or reverse, it responds the same, very little track rotation. Traction cable appears tight and engages but the tracks won't turn.  After removing the bottom plate, the friction wheel was hot and the rubber is smooth. Is this where the problem is? Is there a possible problem in the drive (after sitting all summer, locked up?) Is replacing the friction wheel a tough job?  Thanks for all your input, I appreciate the help.

Answer
Hello Mike:

>>From your Description of the Friction Wheel, it Sounds like there is a Problem with the Drive.
>>Something as Simple as the Drive Chain being Rusted can cause this Problem.
>>The Friction Plate will ONLY Heat up Due to a Binding/Frozen Drive Component that is causing Drag on the Friction Wheel.
