Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro 20054 Self Propelled, manual button, cable kit

Self propelled feature minimally effective as cable is not taut enough to engage belt fully.Any way to adjust this cable? I have jerry rigged the cable effectively shortening it. Is there any way to effectively tighten without buying new cable kit?

I would replace with a new cable...you will get better performance and be more satisified when the system is properly working.  I've tried lubing the cables but they never work as good as new ones.  If you go to this link you can find the repair manual...click on the "manual" button.
