ANSWER: Hello Kirk:

>>Always Remove the Spark Plug Wire/s from the Spark Plug/s before Working on Any Small Engine unless the Plug/s must be Connected to the Coil/s for Diagnostic Reasons.
>>There are Several Different Types of Charging Coils/Stators on these Small Engines.
There is a Site that you can Use for Testing the Charging System and this Site should give you and Idea of where and How the Wires for your Specific Charging System is Connected.
>>For Testing the Electrical (Charging) System on Mowers you can Use this Site Addy; http://engines.myfaqcenter.com/Answer.aspx?p_faqid=3438 and Use the Link for AC Volts/DC Amps Meter Setting Chart. This is for Briggs Engines and Works Well for Kohler, Kawasaki, Tecumseh and Other Engine OEMs.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

Answer
Hello Again Kirk:

>>Thanks for the Model Numbers. They are a Great Help.
Go to this Site Addy; http://www4.briggsandstratton.com/miscpdfs/RNT/alternator_id.pdf and Use this Chart to Identify the Correct Stator/Charging Coils on this Engine.
>>You need to Identify the Plug End (Yellow, White or Black) Attached to the Black Wires from the Stator/Charging Coils.
>>There are 3 Possible Stators that can be Used on this Engine.
>>Also there may be a Voltage Regulator Required for the Stator to Charge Correctly.
>>Using the Chart, Let me know which Stator this Engine is Using for Charging and I can then Tell you How to Correctly Connect the Stator to the Units Electrical System.
>>Thanks.
