Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): how do you check a starter relay on lawn boy, starter relay, key switch

Question
QUESTION: how do you check a starter relay on lawn boy it wont start from switch , but will start from jumping across relay . it turns off with switch fine  i put switch on a second mower and it starts fine thanks in advance

ANSWER: If it will start with jumping across the relay but not with the switch and you know your switch is good then your relay HAS to be defective.
There is no need to test it.
The switch shuts off the engine by ground it out and has nothing to do with the relay.
Let me know what you find out and we can from there.

QUESTION: i would like to know how to check a relay, i have a box full of used ones

Answer
Ok. You will need to supply 12 volts to the terminal that goes to the key switch.
it is usually the small one.
Apply 12 volts to this terminal and then check continuity across the larger terminals, the one that goes to the battery and the one that goes to the starter.
If you have continuity the the relay is good.
