Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere starting problem, john deere 425, starter relay

Question
QUESTION: I have a John Deere 425 tractor which I've recently overhauled the engine. I tried to keep the wires in the correct places but something went wrong because now when I turn the ignition to "on" the starter works, bypassing the brake safety switch also. I looked at the starter and the correct wires appear to be on it. Any help would be appreciated.

ANSWER: It sounds like you hooked the S wire on to the "B" terminal of the switch.  In otherwords its hot right to the solenoid

QUESTION: I haven't had any wires off the ign. switch..Is it possible that the starter relay K1 could be shorted out? Seems to me that when I first tried it it worked normally, but I had to grind on the starter awhile and it never started, I assume because I'd left a ground wire off. After that, the starter ran when on "run" position. I'm not absolutely sure but I think that's what happened. I will go out and check with a meter and see if I can find a short anywhere. I now have a schematic. Thanks for your answer and let me know if there's anything else I can look for on this.

ANSWER: your a step ahead of me now by having a schematic!

QUESTION: It seems that John Deere made the starting system a little more complicated than they would have had to. I'm thinking that if I can't find a short in the system I just may modify the system a little bit; maybe back-date it a little by just removing the solenoid wire and running my own wire to solenoid and maybe even putting in a starter button as a last resort. The way it is now has wires running to a starter relay then to the solenoid, then to the starter. Like I said, it seems more complicated than need be.

Answer
Joe..

This is really hard for me since i dont have a schematic in front of me, I could prob get you some photographs of another 425 as I have a friend who has one... BUT i really would stress against modifying the electrical system, When it comes time to sell or trade... the dealer will seriously discount the tractor.  Make sense?
