Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Shifter hard to shift. Craftsman riding mower., craftsman riding mower, forward gears

Question
I have a Craftsman mod# 502.255092 10hp 30" riding mower.
It will shift into all forward gears and reverse.  It does go forward
and backward. I mowed with it yesterday.

The problem is that
it takes a LOT of force to move the shifter. The shift handle just
doesn't want to move. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
