Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Transaxle, axle shaft, roll pin

Question
QUESTION: I have a second hand lawn/tractor MTD 136Q665G013 (48443) (1996). When riding, the rear wheel slightly comes out of its housing which stops the mower. How can I keep this from coming out. It can come out completely right to the greased center piece. Is there a pin or something missing that allow it to come out?

ANSWER: Hello Paul:

>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Unit at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (MTD) and Enter the Model Numbers (136Q665G013). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Unit you Wish to View. Select the Differential Assy Breakdown.
>>After Viewing the Breakdown of the Differential Assy, I believe the Problem to be the Roll Pin that Holds the Axle Shaft in the Differential Assy.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

QUESTION: I took it in and they said a bolt had dropped off the thread and therefore I needed to get a complete new unit, cost $300+ with labor. I looked at your Differential Assy diagram and it only showed the sealed unit and not the bolt they talked of. Could I open the assy up and do it myself or will I need to take it in?

ANSWER: Hello Again Paul:

>>If you Send me the Transaxle Information that is Located on a Tag in the Transaxle Housing, I May be Able to Locate a Complete Breakdown of the Transaxle.
>>If you have a Complete Breakdown and with us here at All Experts, you should have Very Little Trouble doing this Repair.
>>Thanks.

QUESTION: I appreciate your help. Transaxle info: Model 618-0163 Serial number: H-212338. Would we need to drain the oil first? Just come at it under the battery. I am a little nervous but you seem so kind and helpful and it would save is $300+.

Thanks again. We are feeling blessed!

Answer
Hi Again Paul:

>>First; if you happen to get a Notice that you cannot Ask Any more Follow Up Questions, then Please just Start Another Question Line and Remind me that the Question is a Follow Up to this Unit. You don't have to Copy the Previous Questions. Sometimes it takes more Questions than the System Allows. Thanks.
>>If the Threads are Damaged to the Point that the Correct Size Nut will Not Hold Properly and you want to Save a Few Dollars/Bucks and you have Access to a Tap and Die Set, then Carefully File Off the Damaged Threads until you have Solid Metal. Try to keep the Area as Round as Possible. Thread the Shaft to the Next Size that Matches the New Shaft Diameter. Use Blue Thread Locker on the Threads when you Install the Shaft. The Thread Locker is Better than Any Lock Washer.
>>Yes, you should Drain the Oil as soon as Possible.
>>I Also Suggest you Spray the Transaxle Housing with Oven Cleaner and Clean the Outside of the Housing. Then Set the Transaxle on a Work Bench if Possible. I don't like Bending Over too much. It is Bad on the Spine.
>>You will Require a Flange Nut the Size and Thread that you have Threaded the Shaft or a Flat Washer.
>>As Always, if you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
