Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): point/stator setting, stator plate, compression stroke

Question
On Tecumseh 8 Hp engine
How do I set the right clearance coil/statorplate and flywheel after I changed coil and points,As the wheel has no hole I cant´t see or mesaure the clearance

Answer
hi

can you let me know  model and spec number off the engine plate
is the engine 2 stroke or 4 stroke  , horizontal or vertcal engine
this should be on a tag or stamped on a cover

might look like this format  eg  tvs 115  57010b  ser 3105c

but this may help with flywheel off
if unit has std point ignition  ( coil & point under flywheel)
sett the piston @ 0.090" before tdc compression stroke
loosen stator mount clamp bolts 1 on each side  , remove lead frm point conection terminal
connect a multimeter with a sound  buzzer across point terminal and earth
rotate  stator plate slowley until you hear the buzzer stop making a noise  ( this means the connection to earth is broken and the points have only just broken @ 0.090" before tdc compression stroke , tighten stator bolts and test fit flywheel and check for good spark

if this is proceedure is not right then you may have a external unit or cdi unit type ignition
in which  the setting will be different  let me know    model & spec numbers

cheers paul
