Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): what to clean the carbuerator? with, carbuerator, household items

Question
My Granddad/ acting father that has gone on to a better place worked on mowers his whole life. I regret that I never paid attention to it. He sharpened blades for neighbors at no cost and repaired them, not expecting a thing, but a possible conversation in return.
Anyways, I remember him cleaning carburetors in the garage in a pail. I don't think he bought any special fluid to do it. Do you know of any mix of common household items that will clean the carburetor? The kits are expensive to me, I don't have even $20 to buy it. Please let me know.
Thank you

Answer
Dawn will work to clean the grease but if the carburetor is cummed or varnished up you can use a can of carburetor cleaner to clean most of the internal parts.

If the carb is really cummed up it usually has to be soaked in a strong carburetor cleaner.  These days you can often buy a new carb for the cost for the one gallon can of the carb cleaner.

99.9% of the carbs we clean just need the regular can of carb cleaner.  More important is access to an air compressor to blow out the carburetor holes/orfices.
