Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JUMPER METHOD, Electrical malfunctions

Question
This might be the easiest question of the day but I've been researching how to test switches, solenoid and starter on my MTD riding lawnmower.  I ran over a high tree root in my yard and the deck became lodged and I couldn't raise the deck and the motor died since I could get the blades to stop and the deck raised.  Now the motor won't start so I've been reading on how to find out what's wrong.
By the way, new battery installed, but I wanted to check the fuse and then test the solenoid and starter by "jumping" them but I want to make sure what that means first.  I'm assuming that jumping smaller wires means soldering same gauge and bypassing switches, etc. but when it comes to jumping from the mower battery to the solenoid or starter, do I use automobile jumper cables?

Hi Eric,

This sounds like a complicated problem.  IS the machine still lodged on the tree roots?

In any case I'll try to answer parts of your questions.

I am not an expert on electrical issues.  I don't have the manual in front of me so

you might want to try another expert on those questions.  I will attach some diagrams giving you the tests that you might try to troubleshoot the electrical issues.
