Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere starter, john deere l118, briggs stratton

Question
Have John Deere L118, 20H Briggs & Stratton.  Doesn't Turn Over.  Doesn't Spin Engine.  Jumped It, Still did not start.  What tool do I use to take starter out?  I can't see the bolts.  Do you know what the problem could be?  Tractor is about 5 yrs. old.

Answer
Hi Ralph
You may have to take the cowling off to see the bolts. They will be slightly behind the starter near the top. You should be able to remove them with the correct size open-end wrench. Take the starter to an auto parts store to have it checked. If it's good, try replacing the solenoid and check your main fuse (near the solenoid).
