Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs 8 hp compression, cast iron block, weed mower

Question
my briggs 8 hp ( used on an older bachtold weed mower ) will not start.  it got very hot about a month ago as i ran it not realizing that mice has built a nest in the cooling fins.  it has ran a few times since then, but now definitely does not have adequate compression when i pull the starter cord.  i have replaced the head gasket. but am almost certain that that is where my problem is.  so my question is: how much torque and in what sequence do you tighten the head bolts?

Answer
Hi Doug
If it is an aluminum block, the torque will be 165 in.lbs. For a cast iron block, the torque will be 190 in.lbs. The sequence I use is start at opposite corners then opposite sides. After all head bolts are snug, then I torque them to specs in the same sequence. Hope this helps.
