Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): pulling a Northstar Trencherman towable backhoe, old tractors, killer deal
backhoe
I was thinking of buying a garden tractor or small truck to move this thing around on my property, but I am broke so I have to go cheapest I can. I can get a killer deal on a Montgomery Ward 12/38 with a broken mower since I don't need it to mow. My yard has a slight slope, hence the backhoe, want to dig for a retaining wall and terrace it out. Can this tractor handle the weight? I think the backhoe may be 1450 lbs, website will tell you. Whats the least amount of HP I should look for?

Answer
It is not really the H.P. that is the concern, but the rear end/trans.
They really are not able to handle anything other than the weight on an adult male sitting on them, and in my case, I am
over that limit.  I have seen many times a mower come in with the
tran/differential cracked like an egg, they usually used it to tow a wagon, or boat, etc.
You would need to find an old "garden tractor", which was
a term they used for a lawn tractor with a cast iron rear end, capable of towing attachments, etc..

The Mower you mentioned has a two belt system, and a varidrve
pulley going to a rear end differential, and if the rear end did
not crack open, the belts would burn up quickly.  Keep an eye out for
old tractors and look for the cast iron rears.
