QuestionI have a 10hp B&S model: 251417 type: 0153-01 code: 76011212
It will run when started with throttle wide open, but only very low RPM, just enough to stay running and will not increase RPM even with full throttle. Let go of the throttle and it will die. This has been sitting for a lot of years and I have fully cleaned carb (but did not install OH kit). While running I have moved the governor arm and it will also slow it enough to kill the engine. It does have in internal alternator which is not hooked up and the wires are open. What can I try next?

Answer That model came out with points, and they may be the problem,
So you might want to check the spark, it is likely weak.
And if you decide that the spark is weak, it is better and much easier to pop on one of the newer coils with the electronic ignition in it, and just clip the wire going to the points, no pulling flywheel, etc..
