Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler K161 Valve Keepers, valve keepers, spring tension

Question
I just spent the last 3 hours trying to reinstall my valve keepers after lapping valves.I compressed the spring but there is not enough room to get my fingers in there to get the keepers in place.Exactly how is this done.Do you put the keepers in the retainer first (I tried that method with no luck). Is there some special tool. This is a kohler K161s off of a cub cadet. Thanks!

Answer
I usually smear a dab of heavy grease on the valve, then compress
the spring, and then with more grease on the tip of a small screwdriver, use that to push the keepers onto the valve stem, and with a little work they will stay in place while the spring tension is released.
