Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD mower seat compression springs, seat mounts, compression springs

Question
I have an MTD 12.5 HP riding mower Model 662 that I bought about 17 years ago. This year when I put it in service I noticed that the ride is extremely rough. I removed the compression springs and the seat deflects all the way down so there is no binding. With the springs installed the seat only goes down to the top of the springs with weight on the seat. My question is do these springs lose their "springiness" over time? I hate to buy two new springs at about 14 dollars each only to find that some adjustment will solve the problem.

Answer
There's probably no real adjustment to be made.  Springs will lose their tension over time so it may be that they are worn out.  If you're like me and your back isn't what it used to be, you might think about using a different seat all together.  Tractor Supply has a pretty comfortable one for about $60 that bolts on to most seat mounts with no more than a couple of holes drilled.  That and new springs might help you out.
