Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Chainsaw Fuel Tank Connections, craftsman chainsaw, tubing connections

Question
I have a Craftsman Chainsaw Model 358.354830 on which the fuel lines have embrittled and broken off.  The tank appears to have two tubing connections: one is a barbed nylon fitting with a rubber tip in the tank; the other is just a hole in the tank the same OD as the tubing. How much fuel line is supposed to be in the tank? Does it need a filter on the end or something else? Where does the fuel line (barbed line connector) connect to? Does it just dangle in free air as the inlet or does it go to a filter or other connection?

Answer
I usually just eliminate the barbed connector.  The holes through the tank may be two different sizes requiring two different size fuel lines.

The return line only needs to be an inch or so into the tank.  The suction line should have a fuel filter on it and should rest in the lowest part of the tank.
