Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Bolens Briggs Statton small engine lawn mower, weight oil, bolens
QuestionMy lawn mower engine locked and I can not pull the draw string on the mower. The engine oil is low. If I add the required oil will my engine unlock? What type of oil should I use for a lawn mower?
AnswerIf the engine is seized, adding oil won't fix it. It may not be the engine being seized though. Pull the spark plug out and try turning the engine over by turning the blade. Do not try this without removing the spark plug or you could very well start the engine by turning the blade. If the blade won't turn the engine then the motor may be seized. Other possibilities would be gas or oil in the cylinder or a starter that is jammed up.
Use straight 30 weight oil in most small engines. I prefer Castrol.
