Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Front Axel Assembly, craftsman 917, rough estimate

Question
I have noticed my Craftsman 917.271141 has a cracked front axel assembly (Craftsment part 154427).  Is this type of replacement easy for the DIY, or should this be left to an expert.  In addition, what would a rough estimate of this repair be?  I am debating fixing versus buying a new tractor, as this one is 9 years old.

Thanks - Mike
