Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Mower Engine, lawn mower parts briggs & Stratton model number discountonlineparts lawnmower parts

Question
I have a Craftsman 22 inch Mower with 6.75 HP Tecumseh, Mower model # 917.377.565 and Tecumseh Engine (143) 996510.  I have called Tecumseh & Sears and have not been able to find an answer as to equivalent replacement engine or any details on what crankshaft size & length, or bolt hole location.  I am trying to either get a short block, or the same or equivalent replacement engine.  Cross reference between Craftsman and Tecumseh part numbers does not yield an answer either.  I bought the mower in 1999; everything else is in good condition except that engine was leaking oil even when it is not in use.  Took mower to Sears Repair Service and they said I need a short block--so not worth paying them to fix it.  Can you tell me the crankshaft measurements and bolt holes or what equivalent engine will be?  I heard Tecumseh is going out of business, so I would prefer a different brand of engine.  But a replacement Tecumseh could be a direct fit.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Chien, the bolt circle on the briggs or Tecumseh should be the same. It's an industry standard. The crankshaft will be 7/8" o. d. and 3 1/4" approximately long. In reality a 1999 model year walkbehind mower is really reaching the end of it useful life span. It would be cheaper in the long run to replace the entire unit. If you choose to replace the Tecumseh with a Briggs the throttle cable will work backwards most likely. Unless you find a heck of a deal on an engine I would replace the complete unit.  Hope this help,  Whenever you need lawn mower blades or lawn mower belts please let us know at http://www.discountonlineparts.com/lawnmower/
