Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): riding mower, hard starting briggs

Question
I have a question about my briggs&stratton 18.5 hp model#31p777 type 0348e1040 when i go to start the mower it turns over slow .the first thing i did was put in a new battery and when that did not work i put in a new stater that also did not work so i pulled out the spark plug then turned it over without the plug in it,it turns over fine do you have any ideas   thank you for your time

Answer
You probably just need to adjust the valves.  The compression release is dependant on proper valve lash.  If you go to

http://faqs.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faqs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3441&p...

and scroll down to adjusting overhead valves, you'll find the directions for doing this.

It usually takes a few tries if you haven't done this before so don't get discouraged.  If the problem persists, then the cam may be worn past the point where the compression release will work. Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks, PK.
