Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs and stratton timing, valve tappets, briggs and stratton

Question
QUESTION: i have a b&s 12h802 type 32172 B-1  00041157
i recently took the case apart to seal it, but when i did,,i didnt get a look at the cam gear timing. after about 4 tries of taking it apart, reassembling ect... and searching the net for answers and pictures,,,i finally got it to start. i ran it today,,it seemed fine for about 10 min. then it would start to lask power under load. then finally just stopped. when trying to start it, smoke would puff out of the carb. i also think i added just a little too much oil. any advice will be appreciated,,,im mentally exhausted with this thing.
thanks

ANSWER: The timing marks are easy to see, if you know where to look.
There is a dot on a tooth of the cam, and one in the notch of the crank gear, you put them together when assembling.
You need to check your valve clearances, it sounds like the intake may be a little tight.

When you tore it down, did you have the valve tappets out?

QUESTION: no i didnt,,,i literally just planned on seperating the case and sealing it. but,,, im almost positive i have the timming marks correct now. the only other thing i did anything to,,was sealed the access cover behind the muffler. the engine wouldnt even start back up again since it cut off ,,not even after it cooled down...hope fully this will be my last time of having to open the case up...its getting old having to drain the oil and fuel. thanks

ANSWER: Well, let's step back and start at the beginning.  Why have you done what you have done so far?  What type of equipment is it on?
The last time it was running fine, what happened?  That background might be helpful in determining what is going on.
Also, go into detail of what you have worked on, like the carb, starter, ignition, flywheel, etc...

QUESTION: i believe i just found the problem,,,i noticed the clip on the bottom of the cam gear is bent a little so i grabbed the part off a different engine and compared it. it appears the gear has twisted a good 1/4 rotation. it may have happened when the engine was on a mower but i swapped it to a pressure washer. if i have issues after this,,i will be back. but i am confused about the valve clearance part,,,it doesnt appear to have any way to adjust it. i didnt know 6hp engines had adjustment,,,especially since there isnt a point of clearance at all. im assuming maybe you didnt know it was a 6hp?

Answer
I am still guessing here, but I picked up an extra clue or two.
I will just talk in general though, and hope I help.

The valves are adjusted on these models by removing them and grinding the valve stem to get the proper gap.

When swapping engines parts, etc., you need to know that
there are differences in the engines, depending on their application.
You cannot swap a push mower engine, with a similar engine on a
pressure washer, without also swapping the flywheels.
