Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): riding mowers, jb weld, hp engine

Question
I am in need of a used tractor, I currently have a simplicity regen (i loved it) but a freelance  mechanic ruined it by dropping i off his truck? workbench? Now my transmission is cracked, can I repair this by just getting the outside shell?? they told me repairs would run around 500.00 and be worth it since it's 15 years old with 8.5 hp engine. Today i'm looking at sears dyt 2000, 4 years old with bagger(3 bin) and 21hp enginge, person wants 1000.00, too much? Should i just get the basic sears 17hp on sale for  999.00?

Answer
Yes you can repair it by just getting the outer case.  However unless you are going to do the repair yourself it will be labor intensive.

Another option is to get yourself some JB weld and apply it over the crack on the outside of the transmission.

If this is a hydrostatic unit that includes the pump you may not be able to repair with JB weld.  Its not perfect...but it will work for a short period of time.

Personally i would go with the new sears unit as they offer service and support.  You never know what your getting when you buy used!  (maybe someone fixed the transmission with JB weld.....Get my drift!)  LOL

Good Luck
