Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): set timing on GCV 160 Honda 5.5 HP, belt tension, honda engines

Question
John,

The timing belt keeps coming off of my log splitter.  Took it to town the first time and mechanic reinstalled but wasn't familiar with the new belts.  Came off again this morning after a load of wood.  Why does it keep coming off and how do I find the marks to tell me where to set the back cogged wheel?  Very green on small engines so you'll have to be pretty explicit.
Thank you.

Answer
Hello Jeanne:

>>I Used the GCV160 A1A Engine for a Reference.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower/Engine at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram... and Select the Catalog American Honda.
>>You can Use this Site Addy; http://www.honda-engines-eu.com/en/welcome.html and Select Service Information from the Drop Down Menu of the Service Tab. Then Select Troubleshooting, Owner Manual or Shop Manual (whichever you are Looking for).
>>The Usual Cause for this Problem is a Bent Cam Pulley or the Timing Belt Tension was too Tight when it was Installed.
>>To Install the Timing Belt, you Look for the Following and Align as Stated. On the Cam, there are Two Lines that should Line Up with the Edge of the Valve Cover Seat Area, and the Crankshaft Keyway should be Perfectly Perpendicular with that Line. Once the cam and Crankshaft are Aligned in the Manner I Just Described; Install the Belt. It's been a While, but that is the Short Version.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
