Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): timing marks, craftsman model, clock position

Question
DEAR SIR,
I HAVE A CRAFTSMAN 6.75HP LAWN MOWER.  I AM HAVING TROUBLE FINDING THE TIMING MARKS ON MY LAWN MOWER CRAFTSMAN MODEL# 917.378922.  COULD YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW TO LINE UP THE CRANK AND THE CAM, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.
                            THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME,
                                    DERRICK N.

Answer
Hi Derrick..

There is a dot on both the crankshaft and the camshaft. you need to align them for the engine to be timed properly.  When you find the timing marks on both the crankshaft and the camshaft and begin to align them you will start with the crankshaft timing mark in the 3 O clock position.  The Camshaft will then be in an approximate 9 O clock position.  You simply match the two timing marks up on the gears.

If this still doesn't make sense, let me know and I will take a digital picture and upload it for better clarification.

Let me know how your project is coming along okay!  Feedback is greatly appreciated!
