Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Electric starter - extra wire, adjustment screw, electric starter

Question
QUESTION: just got my carb back from mechanic and after instal I have an extra wire
hanging down (neighbour took carb off for me but is not available)...
assuming wire has something to do with electric starter but dunno for sure...
the attached wire would make contact with the choke when fully engaged... is
the other wire for the light?.... does it need to be hooked up? if so... where...

TIA... dan

ANSWER: Hi Dan,
I'll need to know about the engine and application. Brand, model #'s, etc. Is it on a mower or ?.
Thanks,
Keith

QUESTION: HI Keith... with the heavy dumping of heavy snow yesterday I actually put the
carb back on, without attaching the remaining wire... the snowblower starterd
fine this time and ran, somewhat chuggingly throughout the 30 minutes I
used it (twice)... probably means the little speed screw is set incorrectly?... he
said he set both screws on the carb for 1.5 turns... when I turned if off using
the red key I also had to shut down the throttle before it turned off
completely... then backfired loudly with a spark... I'm happy it cleared the
snow but I know its not quite right yet... could this extra wire be the shutoff
switch?... its not the light cuz the light works just fine... Its a Tecumseh 10HP
motor with factory installed starter (black pushbutton on top - I think there is
only one model with the black on top, most were red on the website)

Answer
Dan,
Does the carb have an adjustment screw on the bottom? If so, slowly turn it closed while the engine is running at full throttle until it smoothes out. It sounds like it's running rich that's probably what made it backfire. The wire is probably a kill wire. Look on the bracket that the throttle cable attaches to. There should be a kill wire connector there. I don't know what else it could be.
Thanks,
Keith
