Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1970s 5hp tecumseh backfires and chugs, real nightmare, adjustment screw

Question
Hello I recently acquired a 1970's Tecumseh 5hp Generator. I have the Generator portion taken off because i do not intend to use it. I can get the engine to run but it is very rough and bucks and backfires constantly and consistantly i have played with the screws a little bit but cannot find anything that works. Also i can only run it when the choke is wide open if i close it it dies right away and it also dies if i puch the throttle. If you cant help me thanks for reading this anyways, if you can awesome. Thanks

Answer
Old Tecumsehs can be a real nightmare. Your description sounds like it could be in the carb OR ignition. I would take the points out, clean them with sandpaper if they're not burnt too bad. If they're pitted they will need replaced. They should be set at .020. Look closely at the wires going to the points and condenser for bare spots. The bottom carb adjustment screw should be set 1 1/2 turns open to start, then you may have to slightly adjust it while running full throttle. The side adjustment screw should be open 1 turn, then you may need to slightly adjust while idling. You may have to take the carb apart and soak it in carb cleaner (not the spray stuff) that comes in a gallon can, like a paint can. Tecumesh carbs are REALLY finicky about being clean. Sometimes even cleaning them didn't work. I would start with the points first, though. I hope this helps.
