Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snow Thrower, gravel driveways, gravel drive

Question
Hi John,

I have a new higher-end Ariens snowthrower.  It has a two-stage auger, which I was told would make it better for a gravel driveway such as mine.  I used it for the first time yesterday, and found that it had a lot of sparks and "chomping" sounds as the stones apparently got caught up in it.  What's your opinion on this situation?  I have a 220' long driveway, and this can't be good for the snow thrower.

Thanks,

Frank

Answer
Hello Frank:

The Snow Thrower is Set too Deep. I have Always had Gravel Throwing Problems on Gravel Driveways. I Suggest you Raise the Depth of the Snow Thrower and Leave a Small Amount (1 to 2 inches above the Gravel/Dirt is Usually Best) of Snow on the Driveway. A Gravel Drive is the Hardest to Clear and Throwing Gravel is Going to Happen, you Just Do Not Want to be Throwing Gravel All the Time you are Trying to Throw Snow. This will Cause Extremely Quick Wear to the Auger Assy Components and the Chute. You can View a Breakdown of the Mower at this Site Addy; http://www.jackssmallengines.net/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. The Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Ariens) and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area.Select the Sectional File. Now you can View the Section of the Mower that Pertains to this Repair. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
