Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): no start, spark plug wire, presence control

Question
hello,my toro is model 20622,i have a no start and no spark, i think the mag is bad but i do not know how to check it, but i was wondering if this engine has points? it ran last week but was hard to start and now it is a no go,2 or 3 pulls and it would run now nothing, any help thanks joe

Answer
Your engine does not have points and condenser it has electronic ignition.  Remove the spark plug replace it and reattach it to the spark plug wire lay the plug against the cylinder head and pull the starter rope.  Don't forget to engage the operator presence control before checking for spark.  The operator presence control is the handle you have to hold down for the engine to run.  If you have no spark I would first check the operator presence control by following the cable from the bail to the break.  Inspect the break and ground for the ignition.  If that is okay remove the flywheel and inspect the flywheel key to be sure it is not sheared.  Remove the ignition coil and clean the mounting area.  Reassemble and set the air gap using a business card or photograph.  The best way to do it is push the coil as far away from the flywheel as you can and tighten the bolts turn the flywheel until the magnets are in front of the coil put your business card between the coil and the flywheel and loosen the bolts on the coil the magnetism will draw the coil to the flywheel magnets.  Then tighten the screws holding the  ignition coil and remove the business card.  Now check for spark again if you still do not have spark replaced the ignition coil.  I hope this information helps you resolve your issue best of luck on your project.
