Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 11hp honda, fuel jet, thin wire

Question
I have a Chuck Wagon ATV with a 11hp 340 cc engine. Works great under a load. Trouble is when idling. The engine will rev when idling...up then down. It will not cut off but comes close. Smells fuel rich ; however I cannt seem to adjust it out. Any suggestions? Russ

Answer
Hi Russ,
Make sure that your governor spring on the carb isn't loose. Also, take off the carb bowl and make sure that the float can move freely. Take a thin wire and clean out the fuel jet hole on the carb bowl screw. If none of this helps, you may have to replace the governor clutch inside the crankcase housing. It is a plastic gear that runs off of the camshaft. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, take it to a repairman. But the other suggestions I have listed above are most likely to be the problem. Hope I helped!
