Land Rover Repair: 2002 landrover discovery low oil pressure-sender?, oil pressure gauge, mechanical oil pressure gauge

Question
At low rpms low oil pressure, had oil pump changed out, mechanic has spoken about main bearings maybe, my vehicle is back at the shop, and stopping over today, it still sounds great when running. Don't want to burn it up, I read about sender unit, could be the problem, not sure what this unit does. Really like my car, and don't want a different one. My husband is ready to give up, I have been working on this problem about two months, just after oil pump went out in front yard ( thank you god I was in my car not letting it warm up like usual) we had to move snow and I just need to move the back 10 feet and it blew the gasket out of the filter. Had it hauled to local shop, we are very rural (closest Lr shop 700 miles). I have a great mechanic but, he is not formilar with my vehicle. He has put hours and hours of work on this problem, at no additional charge and is not giving up yet. So, I have read about bad maybe switch, or sender (how does the sender work) what does the switch do. Also, bad bolt in the oil pump, I am ruling that out do to new pump. Got any ideas. Oh, also he has adjusted oil consistency per conversation with land rover tech. I really want to keep this vehicle, can't afford to get a new car, so, I would probably be buying someone elses problem if I have to get a different vehicle. Our economy is very bad here. Thank you very much for any ideas Terri

Answer
The first thing your mechanic should do is fit a mechanical oil pressure gauge in place of the idiot light.  HE should then run the truck up to operating temperature and see what the pressure really is.  Perhaps it's not low at all - maybe the sender has failed.

If the oil pressure really is low you have to look at tearing down the motor to find the cause.  But make sure that's what's really happening - do the gauge test first.
