Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): brigge 3 hp, power point presentation, hose clamp

Question
QUESTION: similar problem w/ piston and honing, engine start's fairly easily, this is an old motor off an rotoette rototiller. run's ok no power, when I open the carb the motor sputter's and dies, there is an exceptional amount of oil on the piston and huge amount of carbon build up on valves. going to get ring compressor and lap the valves, already pulled the piston, explain to me in layman's term's does honing cause the bore to widen thus needing a bigger piston, thx mjz am a welder and wanted to try to repair this motor so I can rototill my garden before the end of the yr?, thx mjz

ANSWER: Hello Mark:

Honing/De-Glazing the Cylinder with a Hone will Make the Cylinder Larger if you are Not Careful. You have to Keep the Hone Oiled when Using it Inside the Cylinder and you Want to Make the Cylinder Rough Looking and have No Glass Looking Places in the Cylinder. You May Require a Ridge Reamer if the Top of the Cylinder Near the Head has a Lip. I have this Site Addy that May Assist you Also in the Rebuild. http://www.tarleton.edu/~mcgregor/A%20EN%202013/2013%20Labs/Reassembly/OHV.Reass . This is a Power Point Presentation. Remove 1 of the Old Compression Rings and Place it in the Cylinder. Use the Piston to Center the Ring in the Cylinder and Check the End Gap. The End Gap should Not be More than .035in. You should Not Require a New or Oversized Piston. Usually Doing a Re-Ring will Involve a Gasket Set and Rings Only. Everything Else can be Cleaned and Reused. You can Use a Wide Hose Clamp for a Ring Compressor if you have Problems Locating a Regular Spring Compressor. This Site Addy; http://www.johnfvining.com/engine_specs/default.asp will Give you Some Engine Specs. Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: the spec's for my 3.5 hp motor call for 100 lbs torque, is that correct, a 100 lbs seem's like it would snap the bolt, the connecting rod is only aluminum, thx mjz also do I need start up grease for that or just some fresh oil would be ok.

ANSWER: Hello Again Mark:

Sorry for the Delay. I Was Researching Another Question and it Took Longer than Expected. Are you Sure it is Not 100 INCH POUNDS? My Information for Tecumseh Connecting Rod Torques is in Inch Pounds and is 105 Inch Pounds for Most 3.5 Tecumseh Engines. QUESTION: Have a older 3.5 B&S engine, replaced the exhaust valve and piston ring's didn't do anything to the crank except to replace the piston to it, my question is that it ran before now I'm not getting a spark as to I did before I reinstalled the new rings, the magneto worked before when I crank it around now there's nothing from it, could it be the point's which I don't think that's it. or is there something else I might of missed.

Answer
Hi Again Mark:

Make Sure the Coil and Point Set are Not Being Grounded for Any Reason and that the Point Set is Good and Gapped Correctly. The Coil or the Point Set has the Shut Off Wire Connected to it/them. Remove the Shut Off Wire and Check for Fire. If None, then Usually No Fire from an Older B&S Engine is Due to a Bad Condenser and the Point Set has to be Replaced. Moving the Engine Around During the Piston Replacement could have Caused the Point Set Gap to Move and Now they Require Setting. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps.
