Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Replace Lawn mower engine, starter fluid, tecumseh engine

Question
I need to find a replacement engine for my 83 year old dads 1985 4 HP craftsman push mower. The engine is a Tecumseh engine which has a threaded shaft which is 7/8 by 3 5/32 shaft. The mower is a high wheel and is very easy to push. Thanks for any information you can give. The problem we have is the engine will not start. I think no gas because it will run if you spray starter fluid into the filter but then it cuts right off.

Answer
Hello Richard,

Gee, my Dad used to always be spraying starter fluid into his engine to get it started too.

The correct way to check this symptom out is to pour a tablespoon of gas into the hole that the spark plug screws into.  If the engine turns over then you know you have a fuel line supply problem. Make sure no gas lines are kinked or leaking. Make sure the priming device is working properly.  Check to see if the gas cap vent is clogged.

Other than that, good luck.
