Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower blade sharpening, blade of grass, edge of the blade

Question
I realize this isn't engine related, but hope you can help. When sharpening a mower blade, just how sharp should it be?

Should I be able to cut a steak with it or should it just be a bit of an edge?

Answer
No not to a knife edge.  If this is a reel mower the reel needs to be very sharp because it cuts like a scissors.  A rotary mower blade should have a somewhat dill edge.  There should be a blunt edge of about 1/64th".  The best way to tell if the mower blade needs sharpening is to look at the grass a day or two after mowing.  Is the top edge of the blade of grass brown.  If so the blade is dull and it is tearing the grass.  The edge should be green.  If your grass is white looking after you mow and you have to water to get it to go back to green you are cutting it to short.  Pull a blade of grass by the root.  See the white area?  If you cut it there it is to short.  Cut it off in the green area.  Longer grass takes less water because the roots are shaded.
