Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine smokes when started, air filter element, self propelled lawn mower

Question
I have a 16 month Toro 22 inch Recycler self propelled lawn
mower. The engine emits blue smoke, sometimes in large amounts, after it is started. This only occurs if the mower
has been sitting for more than 4 days.
The crankcase is not over filled.

The engine is a Tecumseh Family-6TPXS.1951BC.

Than you for your help in this matter.

Answer
The first thing I would do is replace the air filter element.  The reason I say this is because you may have tipped the mower to sharpen the b;ade or clean underneath it and saturated the filter.

A cloud of blue smoke usually indicates the engine is burning oil.  For the oil to get into the combustion chamber it would have to go past the velve's or through the carburetor.  I suspect the through the carburetor.  This will happen if your crankcase is not vented properly.

If your mower is only 22 months old, it is still under warranty, and I would take it to a dealer to have it repaired.  I hope this helps.
