Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): J deere, solenoid coil, solenoid

Question
I have a John Deere 42" with a 17.5 Kohler, model CV461S, spec PS-27509, s/n 3205304383. The fuel solenoid on the carb failed, measured MegOhm (open). Replaced with new and it failed after 5 minutes of mowing, It was hot, and measured 1.8 Ohms (shorted). I did have to jump start due to a low battery. It seems like something is dragging the voltage down, jacking the current to the solenoid coil. At $74. per solenoid I would like to fix before I fry another one. Any ideas? Thanks!

Answer
I would check the voltage regulator, it could be at fault casing the system to be over charging, sending to much voltage through out the electrical system. Check it with the old solenoid in it, maybe grind enough off the plunger so it isn't shutting the fuel off and it should start and operate. Then check for the correct charging voltage around 13.5v..............Tom
