Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): how do I use the multi meter to check the pTO ground?, craftsman model, blade switch

Question
I have a Craftsman model 917.272260 tractor with a 25 Horse Briggs Intek engine. The blades stopped working. I have read some answers about trouble-shooting the PTO, but I really don't know how to use my multi-meter to run the tests. I know it sounds lame, but even though I have owned a multi-meter for years...well, if you don't practice using it then you can't remember how the darn thing works when the next time comes around if that makes any sense. Thanks for any help!

Answer
Considering all fuses are good, and there is no visual signs of wire damage. Do you hear the PTO click in when you have the mower off and the key on and you switch on the blade switch? If not using a test light check for current at the PTO plug, if current is present your PTO is more than likely in need of replacement. If no current is present at the plug, you must back track to locate the open circuit. This is how I check them in the shop. They are a very basic component. Also if current is present and the lower plate is not clicking up and in you can sometimes tighten the three bolts with the springs to close the gap that has opened due to wear. I have tightened them to just touching then backed them off about a 1/4-1/2 turn to just not touching...Tom
