Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 2003 Sears Craftsman LT1000 riding mower, craftsman lt1000 riding mower, sears craftsman

Question
I purchased a 2003 Craftsman LT1000 riding mower with an 18 horse Briggs & Stratton engine.  The gas was overflowing into my oil which caused the engine to smoke and sputter.  Sears repair came out twice to correct the problem.  Three months after my extended warranty ran out it happened again.  This time the engine ceased up.  I have spoke to a few mechanics and they have told me this is a common problem.  Are you aware of any recalls on this product and what recourse do I have?

Answer
No, what it sounds like is the carb overflowing into the crankcase.  Usually fixed by installing a carb kit.  The only other way is tipping the engine over for some reason.  If you mow on an extremely steep hill you could do the same.  Are you sure it is not hydro locked.  That is where gas and oil fill up the combustion chamber and not allow the piston to move.  Pull the plugs and check spin over the engine to clear and leave the plug out for a few hours.  Then replace the plugs and try again. It could be one or the other or both cylinders that hydro lock.
