Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mtd secondary belt falling off, variable speed pulley, chipper shredders

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 mtd yard machine model 675 . the rear drive belt from the variable speed pulley to the trans keeps coming off. I have replaced belts ,old ones were bad now the belt comes off as soon as I put it in gear. Every thing seems to line up . I am questioning the variable pulley as there seems to be a small amount of play with the center or movable plate in the pulley. any ideas before I spend the $90 on a pulley (#717-0800a)that I am not sure if it is the problem.

ANSWER: Hello Mike:

Usually the Variable Speed Pulley will Stick and have to be Replaced. It is Unusual for this Pulley to Cause the Belt to Jump Off the Transaxle Pulley. Is the Belt Guard for the Transaxle Pulley Set Properly (1/4" from the Pulley and Belt)? Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Generally the identification tag is on a part of the unit that, even after years of use, rarely needs replacement. For most of MTD power equipment, these tags are approximately 2" by 3" in size. They also have the MTD Products name, address and customer service phone number listed across the bottom. For hand held product, the tag is normally white and approximately 1" by 1/2" in size. Hand held i.d. tags are normally on an aluminum portion of the engine, somewhat set into the unit to protect the label from wear. (A bar code will also be on this tag.) Riding mower tags are located on the underside of the seat. For walk behind mowers this tag is found either on the deck or on the rear door of rear discharge units. Tiller model and serial tags are generally on the tine housing. **The model and serial tags for two-stage snow throwers are located on the bottom of the main gear housing which is often called the belly pan, while single stage snow thrower tags are next to the key and primer. For other products like log splitters, chipper shredders and edgers, tags can be found on the frame or main housing.** Thanks.

QUESTION: mtd model # 13af67g062 transaxle belt keeps coming off . I do not have a belt guard on transaxle pulley and I do not see one on the parts manual is there one?

Answer
Hello Again Mike:

Is this a 13AF675G062 Model Mower? I Just Checked 2 of the MTD Mowers here that have the Same Ground Drive and you are Correct. There is No Belt Guard. The Pulleys is Close Enough to the Frame and Idler Pulley that the Belt has Little Chance to Fall Off the Transaxle Pulley. Did the Transaxle Pulley get Bent? Is the Belt the Proper Length (47 3/5" (47.75) Long X 5/8" (.625) Wide)? Did you Route the Belt Properly? If the Transaxle Pulley is Slightly Bent or the Belt is to Long or Narrow or the Belt is Routed to the Wrong Side of the Flat Idler Pulley, then you will have the Problem you Described. I have Never Seen the Variable Speed Pulley Center Sheave Cause the Problem you Described. I have 1 MTD Model that has the Belt Guard for the Transaxle Pulley and the Guard is a Long Bolt (Approx 6" to 8") that is Attached to the Frame. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
