Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD L110, fire situation, gas filter

Question
I have a 5 year old JD L110 riding mower with the Koehler OHV 17.5 engine and it has about 82 service hours on it.  I have done all the maintenance on it, such as oil changes.  This year, it developed a problem where after running for about 30 minutes, it sputters and stalls out and has difficulty re-starting.  I usually have to let it set for about an hour and can re-start it, but after running for a while, it sputters and stalls out again.  It acts like it runs out of gas or overheats.  I have gone through the owner's manual troubleshooting and have replaced the air filter, gas filter, spark plug, and checked the oil level.  Can you give me advice on what to look for?

Answer
Hello Tim:

1- The Next Time it Quits, Check the Spark Plug for Fire. If No Fire, then the Coil/Magneto/Ignition Module is Bad. If there is Fire, then Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure the Cap is Venting Properly. Usually the 30 Minutes Run Time is an Indicator of a Bad Ign Coil/Igniter/Ign Module or the Gas Tank Cap is Not Venting the Tank and a Vacuum Build in the Tank and Restricts the Gas Flow to the Engine. Most JD Mowers Use have an Igniter as well as a Coil. Usually the Igniter is the Cause of No Fire. Lately I have had Several Questioners that had a Bad Coil on the JD Mowers and the Igniter Apparently was Good. I am Saying this because of Input from the Questioners. I have Seen Only 2 Bad Coils in All my Years of Servicing Lawn Equipment. Usually the Point Set or Ign Module is Bad. On the Engines with Ign Coils, the Actual Coil Section of the Ign Coil Does Not go Bad, but the Ign Diode Inside the Ign Coil Usually is the Cause of a No Fire Situation. You cannot Replace this Diode so a New Ign Coil is Required. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (L110) and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. According to the Breakdown for this Engine, there is an Ign Coil and No Igniter, so if the Engine has No Fire when it Quits; the Ign Coil is the Problem. It is Heating Up and Stops firing the Spark Plug. Once it Cools the Ign Coil will Fire the Plug Again and the Cycle Starts All Over Again. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
