Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 4.0 kw Onan Generator, elbow grease, saran wrap

Question
Eric
I recently bought a used motor home with a 4.0 kw Onan Generator. It runs fine but is filthy on the outside. Dirt, oil etc. How can I clean it up? Power wash, engine cleaner or "elbow grease"
Thanks
Dana

Answer
First, cover the muffler and air filter/carburetor with Saran wrap or plastic bags to minimize water entry.

I prefer to use Gunk Foamy Engine Brite.  It does not eat paint and and cuts grease alright.  Soak the engine with Engine Brite, let set a few minutes.  You have have to soak several times and/or use a brush or sponge to remove thick grease/grime.  Wash engine with normal household pressure or a low pressure power washer (less than 1800 psi).

The Gunk stuff works better before applying water to the engine.  If you need to wash the engine several times, it is best to let the engine dry overnight...the Gunk stuff works much better when water is not present.

If possible, I would cover as much of the genset side with plastic as well...no sense in seeing if water will damage it.  If the unit has a fuel cap be sure to cover it as well.

Let me know if this helps.
