Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Timming, spec numbers, compression release

Question
How do you check the timming on a small engine???

Answer
Hello John:

There are 2 Timings for a Small Engine. 1- the Crankshaft and Cam are Set by Matching the Timing Marks on the Crankshaft and Cam. 2- The Plug Timing is Set by the Flywheel Key. If the Flywheel Key is Damaged or Sheared, the Plug Fires, but Not at the Correct Time. If this is an OHV Engine, then the Valve Clearance can Move and Make the Engine Seem to be Out of Time. The Compression Release Stops Operating Properly and the Engine Turns 3/4 Turn, then Slows/Drags/Stops for 1/4 Turn, then Turns 3/4 Turn and Slows/Drags/Stops for 1/4 Turn as if the Timing is Off. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
