Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Riding Lawn Mower, craftsman riding lawn mower, clutch system

Question
QUESTION: I have to let the clutch almost all the way out for the gears to engage.  Once it does engage it, it really catches and almost gives me whiplash.  Is there anyway to have the clutch engage the gears more gradually as I let the clutch out? Thanks

ANSWER: Hello David:

Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Clutch Should Not Grab as you Described. With the Model Numbers I can Look at the Design of the Clutch System and Better Assist you. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Again David:

Thanks for the Numbers. First Check the Belt Routing. If the Routing is Correct, then you May Need a New Belt. From your Description it Sounds Like the Belt is Stretched and the Clutch Bellcrank (#48 in the Ground Drive Diagram) (Also known as Clutch Idler and Pivot) Requires Cleaning and Lubricating. Make Sure the Clutch Return Spring (#55) has Good Tension. With the Deck Removed and No Belt on the Clutch Bellcrank; Operate the Clutch Bellcrank by Hand and it Should Move Freely. No Binding or Tightness when Operated By Hand. You will have to Remove the Clutch Spring in Order to Do this Properly. To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Search. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
