Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnboy engines, briggs and stratton, lawnboy mowers

QUESTION: Hi, i have a handful of old lawnboy mowers and a few of the 2-cycle engines are calling it quits on me.  Do the engines for new lawnboys match up to the old side discharge mowers?  Specifically i am wondering about the new 6.5hp tecumseh and 5hp brigs motors and which would you recommend?

ANSWER: Hello Andrew:

I have Used and Repaired Lawnboy, Tecumseh, Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Honda and Many Others and Really there is Little Difference in the Quality of Todays Engines. Kawaski has a Good Engine that Competes with the Others Also. I Use the Briggs and Stratton or Kohler I/C Engines and have my Own Maintenace Program with Certain Oils and Grease that I Use to Keep the Equipment in Good Operating Condition. I Still Use Lawnboy and Honda 2 Cycle Engines for the Trim Mowers and have Tecumseh, Briggs, Kohler, and Kawaski Engines on the Riding Mowers. QUESTION: What i am really wondering is if i can put a new tecumseh, honda, or briggs 4 cycle motor on an old deck that previously has had the old 2 cycle motor on it.  I don't know if they will match up or not.

Yes you can. Usually you can Install Most of the Same Engines with a Similar HP on Most Decks. Engine Manufacturers and Deck Manufacturers Use the Same Bolt Pattern for Most Decks. Check the Crankshaft Length and Make Sure you are Using the Same Length or you will have Problems. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. QUESTION: Will these new 4 cycle engines replace the D and F series 2 cycle engines?  I want to use the original decks the D and F series engines fit on.  They are the ones with the offset front wheels.  Your help has been very much appreciated.

You can if the Bolt Pattern Matches. I have Even Drilled the Some of the Older Lawn Boy Decks and Mounted Briggs and Tecumseh Engines on them.
