Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): heli-coil for spark plug, briggs straton, hp briggs

Question
i have old craftsman shreder/chopper with a 6 HP.briggs/straton motor the spark plug was removed to change the plug but the heli-coil came out on the plug.how do i repair this? do i have to pull the head off? coul i use JB weld to repair the heli-coil back in the head?

Answer
Hello Ed:

I Never Suggest Heli-Coiling a Spark Plug Hole. The Head is aluminum and Expands Quicker than the Heli-coil and you End up with the Problem you Now have or the Plug and Heli-Coil Blow Out During Engine Operation. I ahve Tried Over the Years to Find a Good Way to Repair Stripped Spark Plug Holes and Other than Going to an Oversized Plug, Replacing the Head and gasket are the Only Sure Way. The Cost of a Cylinder Head and Gasket is Not that Expensive and you are Better Served in the Long Run Replacing the Head and Gasket. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Example: XXXXXX-XXXX. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
