Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ride on lawn mower keeps burning and breaks drive belt off, pulley bolt, transmission pulley

i have a 1998 craftsman 20.5 hp automatic ride on lawn mower with model # 944-600801 i replaced the drive belt cause it burned the old one off it ran fine as it seemed for about 3 minutes of driving and then burned and broke the new one off the same as the old one i am scared to buy a new one and try again because they are quite pricey i put it on the way it showed in the diagram please help

Did you find the diagram on Sears.com website?  I tried looking up the model number but the site said there were no diagrams available.

Please verify the model number.

In the meantime, have you checked the idler pulley, idler pulley arm, engine pulley bolt, and transmission pulley nut.  Make sure the bolts are tight, the idler pulley rotates smoothly and the idler are is not binding.

Let me know the model number again.  Also, do you have the owners manual?
