QUESTION: Would a bad plug cause it to start sputtering and backfiring? It's been running pretty good for the last couple of days then I filled it up last night and it ran for 2 hours before it started backfiring. I'm in Oklahoma City so this has come in handy this week.

ANSWER: Hello Again John:

Yes. However, Usually Water in the Gas is the Cause for Backfiring on Most Generators. Remove the Carburetor Bowl and Check for Water Contamination in the Bowl. If the Bowl has a Drain, then Just Drain the Bowl and See if there is Water. Best of Luck with the Weather. Im Looking for Rain Today and Tomorrow, but Snow on Friday. BTW, I'm in WV. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks for your help John. I added some Heat to the tank, drained the carb. and put in a new plug and it's running 100% better. I had to order a fuel filter which will be in today. The plug is set to .030. It still has a miss about every 20 seconds. Will moving the gap toward the .035 range help this? Day 4 on generator power.

Answer
Hi John:

Thanks for the Update. Im Glad you got it Running Again. If the Miss Still Occurs after Opening the Plug Gap to .035in, then Wait Until you have Run All the Heet Out of the Engine. Heet can Cause a Regulated Miss in an Engine Depending on How Much Water was in the Tank and the Amount of Heet Used to Treat the Gas. I Mention this because Every Mechanic in the Shop Hunted for a Miss and it Turned out to be the Gas. We Added the Heet to Our Shop Gas and Everything we Put the Gas Into had a Regulated Miss. The OEM of Heet Explained that Heet Assisted the Water to Leave the Tank by Breaking it Down into Minute Particles. If this Mixture is at a Certain % of Water, Gas and Heet Additive, you can and Do get a Regulated Miss. Never Suspect a Miss as Being a Problem when you KNOW your Gas was/is Contaminated. Once Fresh Gas in in the Tank and the Engine has Run for 3 to 5 Minutes with the Fresh Gas can you then be Sure the Miss is Caused by Something Other than the Gas. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
