Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler K532 no spark while cranking, external coil, spark tester

Question
I have a Bolen HT 20 with a Kohler K532  53138 .
I have a spark tester that I put between the coil(part number 277375-S) and the spark plug.I can watch the spark.I get one spark when I start cranking the engine and one when I release the key,but no spark while I am cranking the engine. The engine will start and run just fine(with continuous spark) on the last spark as I release the key. This is ok except if it isn't stored indoors it won't start in cold weather.
Do you have any suggestions as to what it might be

Answer
Hello Rod:

Make Sure the Contacts of the Point Set are Clean and Making Good Contact. If the Point Set is Making Good Contact, then The Battery, Starter or Coil Are the Next Areas to Check. This Looks to be an External Coil. If the Battery is Weak, then the Starter Draws the Current that Would Normally Fire the Coil. The Coil Requires a Minimum of 10.2 VDC to Fire the Plug. If the Battery is Good, then the Starter May have Bad Bushings or Brushes and be Drawing More Amps than Usual and is Taking the Voltage the Coil Requires to Fire or the Coil May be Breaking Down and Needs to be Replaced. This Used to Happen All the Time on the Older Vehicles with the Point Set. I Suggest you Load Test the Battery First, then Test the Starter AMP Draw. If these are Good, then the Coil is the Problem. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Catalog you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
