Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Peerless 206-545C problem, shift linkage, rare problem

Question
Hi John,
I just purchased a used Craftsman LTX1000 tractor, 6 years old that is in need of transmission repair, it jumps out of 4th gear and into 5th or 6th. It has the Peerless 206-545C transmission. The previous owner stated that he always used 4th gear while mowing and maybe something is worn. Once it jumped out so hard that it broke the shift linkage rod by the ball joint. I just bought it this week and while I was test driving it, I found that it also jumps out of reverse when hitting the slightest bump and goes into neutral. I would like to attempt to repair it myself. Do you have any idea as to what is causing it to jump gears?  Thanks

Jerry

Answer
Hello Jerry:

Usually the Shift Keys will Either Cause the Shifter to be hard to Shift or Allow the Transaxle to Jump Out of Gear as your Transaxle is Doing. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the P. Then Select Peerless. Then Select To View Parts List Click Here in the Upper Right of the Page. Then Select the Series Transaxle (206). Then Select the Transaxle File for your Transaxle (206-206-545C). In the Breakdown the Shift Keys are Shown as #8. The Part Number is 792180 and 2 are Required. Open the Transaxle Case and Check the Gears for Rounded Edges. If the Gears Edges are Worn Badly, then the Transaxle will Not Stay in Gear Also. This is a Rare Problem, But I Need to Mention it. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
