Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S engine burning oil, bush hog, 6 digits

Question
QUESTION: I have a Bush hog ZTR mower with an 18 hp B&S Twin Cyl. Intek engine.  After only 24 months of easy use and careful regular maintenance, it is burning lots of oil. Cannot use more than an hour without adding oil.  Your diagnosis?  Surely can't be worn rings this soon???

ANSWER: Hello Allen:

If this is a OHV Engine, then a Head Gasket Could be Blown between the Compression Chamber and the Push Tube Galley. When this Happens the Engine will Use Oil like the Rings are Worn Out and the Engine will Not have Any Noticable Power Loss. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

QUESTION: This is my elderly mother's mower and it is 500 miles away from me.  The engine is a B&S Intek 18 hp Twin Cylinder OHV vertical shaft.  Only markings I was able to obtain is YBSX.7242VS  274844.  Don't know what denotes model, family, or serial number.  Any help would be appreciated. I am very disappointed in this B&S and the company is non-responsive. Wanting my mother to get the engine to an authorized service center, have it torn down, and then deciding if it was a defective engine.  In other words do their research and pay the bill for it.

Answer
Hello Again Allen:

I Required the Model Numbers to See if there was Any Recalls on the Engine. You Did Send the Correct Model Infoormation. Thanks. There is No Recall Listed for this Engine and No Other Major Problems that I could Locate. I Suggest you; 1- Check the Crankcase Vent and Ensure it is Operaion Properly. 2- Remove the Cylinder Heads and Check the Head Gaskets. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
